EmpowerBio outreach activity at New Town High School

New Town High School students had an engaging session at the Titan Talks, where they had the opportunity to explore careers in biotechnology.

Engaging students to learn about Biotech Educational and Career Pathways

New Town High School students had an engaging and informative morning at the Titan Talks, where they had the opportunity to explore careers in biotechnology through EmpowerBio. This event was coordinated and organized by Ms Kathryn Duncan, career navigator at the school. EmpowerBio conducted an interactive session that engaged over 50 students, featuring hands-on activities, guest speakers, and insights into various career pathways in the field.

Amrita Madabushi, the founder of EmpowerBio, led the session, sharing her inspiring journey from biochemistry researcher to biotechnology educator. She facilitated a hands-on activity that involved building nucleotide models, demonstrating how atoms serve as the fundamental building blocks of DNA. This collaborative team exercise not only deepened students' understanding of molecular biology but also fostered teamwork and problem-solving skills.

The session featured two distinguished guest speakers:

  • Da’Kuawn Johnson, a PhD candidate at the University of Maryland, shared his academic journey, emphasizing the importance of embracing boldness and exploring unconventional career paths. He encouraged students to be open-minded and to carve their own unique trajectories in the biotech field.
  • Allison Bernard, an R&D Cell Biologist at Thermo Fisher Scientific and an alumna of New Town High School, reflected on her experience of being in their shoes just nine years ago. She discussed her decision to change majors and the rewarding aspects of her current role, reassuring students that career shifts are natural and can lead to fulfilling opportunities.

Feedback on the DNA Model Activity

The hands-on nucleotide model-building activity was a major highlight for students:

  • “I liked that we got to build a DNA model. Everyone on the table was able to participate and work together.”
  • “I enjoyed how we had to put our minds together to complete the activity.”
  • “The challenge of the activity pushed me to focus. It was a little difficult, but if you pay attention, you will succeed.”
  • “I felt very engaged in this class activity, and it was nice doing it with my peers.”
  • “It was a hands-on, collaborative, and immersive experience.”

Student Reflections on the Experience

Students shared enthusiastic feedback on the session, highlighting the impact of the discussions and activities:

  • “The message about how you should step out of your world to explore the world.”
  • “The talk included information on the application process, career opportunities, and the importance of mentorship.”
  • “What really stuck with me was the idea of being bold and that our path doesn’t have to follow a conventional route.”
  • “I loved hearing someone encourage me to follow my heart throughout my journey.”

The event provided an invaluable opportunity for students to gain firsthand insights into the world of biotechnology and to see real-life examples of professionals thriving in the field. With the combination of engaging activities, inspiring guest speakers, and dynamic discussions, Titan Talks successfully ignited curiosity and enthusiasm among the next generation of biotech professionals.
