EmpowerBio specializes in enhancing student training and career mentoring to support biotechnology and biology programs from undergraduate to the graduate level.
Our range of services for student cohorts in a program include:

Comprehensive Workshop at Towson University
We provided two-week comprehensive skill and professional development training at Towson University's BRIDGES program scholars with a goal to jumpstart summer internships (June 2023).
Our workshops included-
Skill Focused Training : Lab Safety and precautions, Lab math (Dilutions and molarity calculations, Lab techniques and Instrumentation (Protein separation, analysis and detection techniques).
Professional Development and Communication Focused Training: Literature review (Pubmed and Google scholar), Bioethics training, CV/ Resume building, LinkedIn profile update.
Comprehensive Training for a JHU-UMB internship
We recently trained UMBC undergrads for summer internship in an NSF funded biofuel engineering internship (REM supplement awarded to JHU and UMBC from the National Foundation (NSF) Office of Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation (EFRI). (July 2023).
We provided the first week of training in theory and methods related to the project. These included techniques ranging from making common lab solutions to cloning.
We also provided various scientific literature, communication and presentation training. This training involved preparing and attending project specific topic updates and journal presentations of the student interns.
Outreach activity at a local high school
EmpowerBio collaborated with Young Women in Bio (YWIB) to conduct an informative session at the Woodlawn High School located in Baltimore. Woodlawn High School students from Project Lead the Way had the opportunity to learn about careers in medicine. Over 30 students actively engaged with professionals from the scientific realm, participating in hands-on experiments and posed insightful follow-up questions.
They learned about carees in medicine, especifically focusing on the MD-PhD pathway. They met two speakers currently pursuing MD PhD and got some valuable insights into their career path. They were also introduced to opportunities provided by Young Women in Bio.
